The procedure involves a very thin lamination; the lamination is usually either porcelain or ceramic. The lamination is cemented on to the front of the tooth to improve the appearance of the smile. This is a very effective procedure and easily carried out with excellent results.

Veneers are best described as thin slices of porcelain. These are made to precisely fit over the visible surface of your front teeth, in a similar way that a false fingernail fits over a nail.

Veneers are an excellent way of making your teeth look healthy and natural. There is very little preparation of the tooth needed because veneers are very thin and are held in place by a strong dental adhesive. In some instances there is no preparation needed at all.

Veneers can improve the position, colour and shape of your teeth. An exact shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the correct colour to lighten the front teeth or improve a single discoloured tooth. A veneer is an excellent choice in making a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth and is thicker over the broken part of the tooth that is being repaired. At Dental fx, we also use veneers to close small gaps when braces (orthodontics) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

Veneers are used in a number of situations. Listed below are a few of these situations:

  • When there appears to be discolouration of a tooth that cannot be removed
  • When there is an abnormal structure or texture, including chipping, fractures, or wear (this is known as 'erosion') of the tooth
  • To help with the closure of spaces between front teeth
  • To make an illusion of straight teeth with the desired colour and shape when front teeth are slightly crowded
  • To hide front teeth that have a number of fillings that are shallow and unsightly

Compared with a crown (cap), less of the tooth needs to be drilled away. Veneers are relatively quick and simple, although they require as much planning and attention to detail as any other treatment.
